how did you get here:
 
you logged on as a DJ and choose to be in an "ON AIR" mode on the "verify ON or OFF AIR" page.  you are now ON AIR and you can start putting your songs you play to your playlist.  if you did not want to be ON AIR, then you should log off by pushing the "Log off" button on the screen.

WARNING: if there was any other DJ ON AIR, when you choose to be ON AIR just now, you also logged that DJ off, therefore taking over the station's current show!!!  this is normal if you are the next DJ scheduled to be ON AIR or if you are supposed to be the current DJ at the your station.

NOTE: if the next DJ is ready to take over the station airwaves right after you and you know that this next DJ will also use grapefruitmusic to continue the station playlist, then you don't need to log off, because by the new DJ logging on and going ON AIR, (s)he will log you off.  so log off if you are not sure if anybody after you will use the system or if you logged on by mistake.

 
 
what can you do here:
 
this page has three main areas: the playlist creating area, the requests area, and the recent playlist area.  you can do the following things on this screen:

  • LOG OFF
    if you did not mean to be here or if you are ending your show and there is no other DJ coming ON AIR right after you, then you can log off by pushing the "Log off" button on the top of the screen.

    NOTE: if you forget to log off after your show, then the system will log you off after there is no more activity during your session (interaction between a browser and the system) for more than 25 minutes.  however given that this process is more 'delicate' and prone to bugs, it is highly recommended to log off manually or make sure that the next DJ is logged on.

  • ADD NEXT SONG TO PLAYLIST
    you can add the song you are playing on your show NOW to your playlist on grapefruitmusic, so that people can see everywhere in the world NOW what you are playing on your show NOW!!!  in other words you have REAL TIME PLAYLISTS!  (see the next section on how to do this...)

    by adding your songs while you are playing them, you are automatically creating your playlist which you can manage later on by completing information you don't have time to enter while you are doing your show.

    only the name of the band is a required field.  the rest of the information (song, album, label) is optional, and can be added by the DJ after the live show when OFF AIR.

  • SEE WHAT IS PLAYING NOW
    you can also see what you are playing currently after you start entering your songs.  in the following example a DJ would be playing a song from The Fall from their album Extricate...

  • SEE MOST RECENT PLAYLIST
    you can see the last 5 songs you just played on your show (after you added them to your playlist on grapefruitmusic...)  in the following example you would have already played two more songs after that previous Fall song...

  • CLICK TO PLAYLIST MAINTENANCE
    you can link to update your playlist by clicking on the link "manage your past playlists" you can see above.  this lets you update your playlist, for example enter song, album and label information where you did not have enough time to enter that information when you played the songs.

  • VIEW LISTENER REQUESTS
    you can view listener requests that are directed to the station, and most likely to the DJ ON AIR.  since this is unfiltered free text from anyone who cares to comment, be ready for some rude or weird comments.  you can push the "Refresh" button in the requests area to see the most recent requests.
 
 
how can you do it:
 
ADDING A NEW SONG TO YOUR PLAYLIST: 
    1. click on the starting letter of the band you just started playing in the below section.  for example for "The Fall" you would click on the letter "F".  for band names that start with "The", click on the first band letter, not on "T", because they will not be listed under "T"!

    NOTE: when you will want to add a new band such as "The Fall" to the grapefruitmusic list of bands as a DJ, entries "The Fall" and "Fall, the" will be automatically converted to "FALL, THE" - converting it to all upper case and moving the first "The " to the end and adding a period in between.

    however if you enter "Fall", this will be a different band to the system, having its own band id.  as this would cause great confusion and misinformation in the system, newly added bands will have to be 'policed' for B.S. periodically, and obvious misspells and mistakes cleaned up manually.

    2. after you click on any of the letters, the screen will refresh with a section showing all the bands that start with that letter listed in alphabetical order.  there is also a section to add a new band to grapefruitmusic.  finally there is a section to add optional information for your song you are playing:

    PICK NEXT BAND FROM EXISTING:
    FALL, THE  FFF  FIII  FIFI  FLIPPER 
    FROGS, THE  FUCKEMOS 
    OR CREATE A NEW BAND:

    OPTIONALLY YOU CAN ENTER:

    3. IF you find the band you are about to play listed under the "PICK NEXT BAND FROM EXISTING:" section, the simply mark its radio button.

    OTHERWISE if you can not find the band you are looking for (or the band is grossly misspelled), then you can add a new band by typing the name of the band into the text area next to "band name" under the section "OR CREATE A NEW BAND:".

    NOTE: adding a band which was already added to the system will NOT do any harm.  however if the spelling is different or incorrect, the band will be treated as a different band.  upper/lower/mixed case DOES NOT MATTER.  all band names will be converted to upper case.

    NOTE: the manually added new band WILL TAKE PRECEDENCE over marked radio buttons.  this means that if you mark a radio button AND you also put a new band next to "band name" then what you are are adding to the system will be whatever is next to "band name", not the marked radio button.

    so if you screw up with the radio buttons, just enter the band name next to "band name" (and try not to misspell it...).  as a matter of fact if you spell correctly and like to type, you can always just enter the band names as opposed to mark radio buttons...

    4. if you wish (and have time to) you can also enter the album, song and label info of the song you are playing.  only the band name is required however, and you can update this optional information either during your show when you have time by clicking on the "manage your past playlists" link.  you can also do this after your show when you are OFF AIR.

    5. and finally when you marked and/or completed all the info for your song you are playing, push the "Go for it!" button on the bottom.

the song info you just entered will now be displayed under the "CURRENTLY PLAYING:" section on this page, as well as on your station's detail page viewed by your listeners.  as you play your songs on your show, you can keep repeating these same steps, building your station's playlist.
