ups, I think I just went ON AIR with grapefruitmusic by mistake; how do I get OFF AIR?

press the "Log Off" button on the top of the ON AIR page

log in or re-login with different status (ON/OFF AIR)?

follow these steps:

  • fill out your login and password in the upper frame (again!)

  • click on the upper frame's "station" tabs to re-login (you will go back to the station area at the same time...)

NOTE: filling out your login info and clicking on any of the tabs WILL LOG/RE-LOG YOU IN!!!

  • follow the steps on the going ON/OFF AIR verifying page.

  • mark the ON or OFF AIR radio button, depending on what you want to do

  • push the "Go for it!" button.

  • if you find yourself ON AIR and you are not supposed to be, GO OFF AIR IMMEDIATELY by pushing the "Log Off" button - you might have just logged off the DJ who was ON AIR, in which case (s)he will have to go ON AIR again after they realize that someone just "screwed" them...

how to get to the page where I can do all this DJ ON AIR stuff?

  • log in, clicking to the "station" area.

  • choose to go ON AIR.
  •

how do I know whether I am ON AIR or not?

when you click to the "station" tab in the top frame, the page you see in the bottom frame says on top that you are "ON AIR!!!" and you also see the image.

what do I do when I am finished with my show (go OFF AIR)?

click on the "Log Off" button on the top of the ON AIR page.

the next DJ is ready to take over the show; what do I do?

you can just let him/her log in and go ON AIR - this will log YOU off automatically.  but best bet is to just click on the "Log Off" button on the top of the ON AIR page.

how do I take over the show from another DJ who is ON AIR right now?

just LOG IN and choose to go ON AIR.

I am starting to play my first song; how do I start entering them into grapefruitmusic?

    in brief, follow these steps:

    • make sure you are ON AIR and you are on the ON AIR page.

    • click on the first letter of the band you want to play under "PICK LETTER FOR NEXT BAND".

    • after the page refreshes, mark the band you are playing OR enter a new band name

    • you may fill out some optional fields as well if you have time...

    • click on the "Go for it!" button on the bottom of the page
for more detail see the appropriate help page.

make sure listeners are seeing what I am entering into the system REAL TIME?

if you are ON AIR right now and you have just entered a new playlist item for your new song you are playing, click on the "home" tab on the top frame to go to the home page, then click on your station's link, and verify that it shows the same song you are playing.

if you feel lonely, you can also send a listener request to yourself...

I don't see the band I want to play in the system; how do I add it?

type in the name of the new band next to "band name" under "OR CREATE NEW BAND".  for more help see the appropriate help page.

NOTE: add bands that have the word "the" in their name as "the bandname" - the system will automatically conver this to "BANDNAME, THE" so that the name will show up under the letter "B", not under "T" ...

I see the band I am playing, but it is misspelled; how do I correct it?

you can re-enter the band name with the correct spelling as a new band.  then, whenever you will have the time after your show you can request the other band name to be deleted and its favorits re-assigned to the correct spelling from the band maintenance page under development.

I see two or more versions of the band I want to play (like "FALL", "FALL, THE"); how do I correct it?

this will be possible from the OFF AIR DJ menu from the band maintenance page under development.

    enter a new band's name; upper-lower case...?

the case does not matter, as all band names entered will be automatically converted into upper case by the system.

the list of bands showing up is just too long to browse through; can I just re-enter the band I want to play?

yes you can, if this is quicker for you.  you can just re-enter the band into the system; this will NOT create duplicate records, UNLESS YOU MIS-SPELL the name.  (in which case you can correct it later...

how were all these bands I see entered into the system?

they were all entered by DJs at the participating stations though these ways.

again, why should I enter all my songs I am playing to grapefruitmusic?

mainly so that listeners can see what you are playing and can add the bands to their favorits collection if they like what you are playing and that you can access and manage your playlists and your station can generate reports from the data...

I feel I am too busy to enter all this stuff while I am doing my show; what do you say about that...

you can at least enter the band name; it is only a few clicks to create playlist items and your LISTENERS ARE DYING TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PLAYING!!!  you are also giving them a chance to keep track of the bands you are playing on their favorits calendar.

how do I check if people liked the songs I played?

you can see what bands did listners added to their favorits collection.  this will be one of the reports available to the station from the summary station reports page currently under development.

    see listener requests real-time?

once you are ON AIR you can see them listed under the "REQUESTS:" part of the ON AIR page.   click on the "Refresh" button above the requests window to refresh the list...

I am playing the next song; what's next?

keep doing the same as you did for your song before.

NOTE: your previous song will be appended to the "5 MOST RECENT IN PLAYLIST:" you can see below the requests section...

I either messed up or could not enter all the info for the songs I played; how do I correct that?

you can update your playlist and enter optional info you did not have the time to enter during your show from the OFF AIR functionality page by clicking on the " manage your past playlists" link.

I entered the wrong song; how do I correct this?

if you feel it is urgent, you can click to "manage your past playlist" right from the ON AIR page.  but you can do the same after your live show is over from the OFF AIR functionality page by clicking on the "manage your past playlists" link.

I just played a few songs without entering them into the system; how can I make this up?

each playlist item is inserted into the system with the CURRENT SYSTEM TIME.  therefore if you are not inserting playlist items when you are playing them, your listeners will have a harder time figuring out what have you been playing.  but READ ON BECAUSE YOU CAN CORRECT THIS!!!

you can make up missed songs by quickly entering them one after the other while you are ON AIR until you are current with your playlist.  or just wait till your show is over, then insert the missed songs by updating your past playlist and inserting the missed songs.

    • if you have entered all your playlist songs but with the WRONG TIMES, then click on the "update" link of the rows and correct the playtimes USING THE SAME TIME FORMAT YOU SEE! ("5/20/00 4:09:36 PM")

    • if you are missing a chunk of playlist items, click on the "insert after this" link on the row AFTER WHICH you want to insert a new playlist item.  fill out the item details and make sure you ADJUST THE PLAYTIMES to reflect what you have been playing when.

NOTE: the playtime you see on the insert new playlist item page under "playtime" is set to 10 SECONDS AFTER the playtime of the song you clicked on to insert after, so that the sequence of songs is preserved.  you are adjusting so it is not one song after the other with 10 seconds between but with realistic times...

I have not had the chance to enter my playlist during my show; can I do it after I am done?

yes you can.  it is a bit cumbersome, but here is how:

    • make sure you know your exact start and end time of your show that DOES NOT CONFLICT WITH OTHER DJs PLAYTIMES by checking against the public past playlists page of your station on that day

    • then on your update past playlist page click on ANY of your past playlist item's "insert after this" link on ANY date (click on ANY date link where you have playlist items if you don't see items on your most recent list)

    • start with entering THE FIRST SONG OF YOUR SHOW you are missing

    • after you filled out the item details, make sure you ADJUST THE PLAYTIME OF YOUR FIRST SONG TO the time you were actually STARTING YOUR SHOW at your station (make sure you won't conflict with the next and previous DJs playlists...)

    • after you added your first song of your missed show, go to the date of your missed show (if there was no link for it so far, now there will be one...)

    • keep inserting playlist items AND ADJUSTING THEIR PLAYTIMES, keping the "5/20/00 4:09:36 PM" format by clicking on the "insert after this" link of your latest song

    delete songs from my playlist?

from the manage your past playlists page click on the delete link of the playlist item's row you want to delete.

you can do this while ON AIR, or you can do it after your live show from the OFF AIR functionality page by clicking on the "manage your past playlists" link.

change a band name on my playlist?

from the manage your past playlists page you can delete the playlist item and insert a new playlist item after the previous one:

    • copy the "playtime" column of the playlist item you want to change - this is needed to insert the new item with the same time!

    • delete the playlist item by clicking on the "delete" link of the row under the "action" column. - the page will refresh without the column you deleted

    • click on the "insert after this" link of the row that WAS BELOW THE ROW YOU JUST DELETED, the song after which you will insert your replacement item - you will go to the "insert new playlist item" page

    • click on the first letter of the band you want to insert as a replacement - you will be asked to pick an existing band starting with that letter or create a new band in the system

    • paste the copied playtime you copied in the first step to the "playtime" column - you are replacing the playtime (that is set to 10 seconds after where you clicked to insert a new playlist item) with the original playtime of the item you are replacing

    • after you click the "insert" button, your old playlist item with the wrong band will be replaced with the new band you just inserted with the same playtime

NOTE: if listeners clicked to "Add current band to my favorits!" button on the station detail page WHILE YOU WERE PLAYING YOUR SONG ON AIR, then after you replaced the band in the playlist item, they will have the "wrong band" in their favorits collection.  this is an "Oh Well" side effect...  what you can do is to enter the correct bands in your playlists so you don't send your listeners to the "wrong concert" to check out...

complete the playlist by adding album, song, label info after my show?

from the manage your past playlists page you can update playlist items by clicking on the "update" link of the playlist item, then modifying those fields.

NOTE: if you don't change the "playtime", it will update with the old value it had before...

what about the playtimes; how are the different time zones managed in the system?

your station is located X hours before or after CENTRAL US TIME ZONE, where the system is currently hosted.  so all playlist times will be added or subtracted this X hour from this time zone, giving you your local time.

I am doing this show with another DJ; who is logging on and how are the playlists managed?

whoever logs on and goes ON AIR will carry that session's playlists, so in the future you can modify that playlist with that login.  if you are regularly doing your show with another DJ or DJs, then ask your station manager to create a login for the show itself, which each DJ of the show can use.

if you can't find your answer...

write to help@grapefruitmusic.org! we will make sure that all your questions are answered...

what happens if I forget to log off after my show and noone is taking over the show?

your show WILL TIME OUT AUTOMATICALLY and you will be logged off after 25 minutes of no interaction with the system.   so if you are playing a song for 30 minutes, make sure that you are at least click on the listener request button in the middle...

    find your way and navigate?

  • click on the upper frame's "home", "listener", or "station" tabs to go to the main areas and use your browser's "Back" button to go to previous pages. if you have good ideas for navigation links, write to help@grapefruitmusic.org
