| allright, what are you trying to sell us? |
| |
|
Nothing! No commercial crap here!!! We are an organization
for the benefit of the participating radio stations, their listeners and the
bands they play on the air. It is intended to be a FREE SERVICE for all participating
stations and their listeners.

| |
| what is grapefruitmusic.org? |
| |
|

to be an ONLINE COMMUNITY of non-commercial free form radio stations, their
listeners, and the music they play. The website is a dynamic, real-time database driven web
application. It is a free service in the form of a website
that is designed to bring all thes parties closer together, benefiting all.

| |
| who is "behind" grapefruitmusic? |
| |
|
grapefruitmusic was created and developed by an ex KVRX DJ and a couple of friends who all happen to
be web developers and designers with a passion for what these stations are doing.
Other than this team, only the PARTICIPATING RADIO STATIONS will be "behind" grapefruitmusic.
There are no other affiliations!!! Therefore it is very
important that only certain types of stations can be part of the system.
Your station is one of the invited stations to be featured on the site! The initially invited
stations are:

In the future, participating stations will be able to decide BY VOTING which
new stations can become part of grapefruitmusic, making sure that the mission of the site
is not "contaminated" by commercial interests.
|
| |
| |
| who is paying for this? |
| |
|
There was no funding for the project, other than our determination and the time
invested as a voluntary effort. We felt lucky that we had just the skills to build such a site.
The site hosting is currently financed with personal funds. Maintenance is done by the developers of the site who
are committed to the success of the site and can afford to do so for the foreseable future. Other arrangements
are possible when participating stations decide.
|

| |
| |
| we already have a website; why do we need this? |
| |
|
The biggest benefit of the site is to bring together FREE-FORM NON-PROFIT RADIO STATIONS AS A COMMUNITY. grapefruitmusic.org is NOT A REPLACEMENT
for the individual station websites. You already have a cool website that we
would not dare to touch. We simply give stations the above mentioned functionality.
Probably the greatest benefit will be for your LISTENERS (see
below) who will KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE PLAYING and then will go and SEE THOSE BANDS
LIVE IN CONCERT and will BUY THEIR MUSIC WITH MUCH LESS HESITATION!!!
Also, compare the FREE FUNCTIONALITY given to the stations and their listeners with any other site.

| what about the web hosting situation? |
| |
|
Currently the site is hosted by an ISP for a relatively low cost. The bad side of this might be performance, as
a lot more than one website is on one server and a lot more than one database is on one data server. If performance
becomes a big issue, we will do tuning and explore the option of upgrading the hosting service to a dedicated server of our
own to withstand a lot more traffic. There are cost implications which we will have to examine together with the participating
stations, but generally speaking upgrading should not be a problem in the future.
|
| |
| |
| what is the current state of the system? |
| |
|
the site is READY FOR PUBLIC USE on the discretion of each station and their personnel.
|
| |
| |
| what do we as a station need to do to start using the system? |
| |
|
If your station is one of the stations initially invited to participate, just try using the system with your login sent
to you through email to get familiar with the functionality and features. If you have a question, try to look at the
"HOW TO..." guide, or write to
help@grapefruitmusic.org.
Once the system is public, you may use your login as a DJ or station manager. As a guideline, station personnel
should complete the following things to ready their station area for public use:
- STATION MANAGERS should have
- delegated station manager rights to the right people (for security, there
should only be a maximum of 3 people per station with this right...)
- updated the list of station DJs to the most up-to-date list with proper settings
- filled out the station program schedule and assigned shows to weekly timeslots (creating the shows in the
system at the same time).
NOTE: there is no need to fill out the show details other than the name of the show, as DJs
assigned to the show will be able to do that...
- assigned DJs to shows. DJs will then be able to update their shows' details
- updated the station's audio feed links so listeners can click to listen from the station detail page.
NOTE: it is a benefit to your listeners to link right away to your audio links. however you can put any link here
you choose, like the link to your station's homepage or listen page ass well. some stations who have Javascript links to their
audio links might have to do that...
- updated the station's basic info that appears on the station detail page.
- STATION DJs should have
NOTE: If you are NOT one of the initially invited stations and would like to join, fill out the
new station application and stations on the system will be able to vote on your application.

| site overview |
| |
|
the site is organized into three main areas:
-
HOME AREA
This is the main page where listeners can see and link to all the station detail
pages and see which stations are "ON AIR" on the system.
For each station basic information such as name, location and the genres of the current show on air is viewable.
Each station link leads to the detailed station page that is
specific to one radio station. If the station is "ON AIR" then there is
information on the currently playing artist (as entered by the DJ "ON AIR" at the station...)
There are links to the most recent playlist, past playlists, music calendar, program schedule, and
there is the online requesting feature that sends listener requests to the station real time.
If the listener who views this page is a registered listener, then the currently playing song
can be added to the listners "favorits collection"
-
LISTENER AREA
This is a personalized view for each registered listener. This is the place where a
listener can view and update all the bands in his/her "favoroits
collection". The favorits collection is a list of bands the listener heard on one of the
featured radio stations and wanted to track. Bands can be added to the collection by adding the currently
plaing artist from an online radio station, or by listeners manually adding their favorits to the list.
The most powerful feature of this area is the monthly "
calendar view of the favorits". This is a monthly calendar of events of the
bands that are in the listener's favorits collection.
The way it works is that the listeners add bands they care about to their collection. Each band can
have events - such as concerts - that are entered to the system by DJs maintaining their station music calendars.
If the band is part of a listener's favorits collection as well, then the event entered by the DJ to the
station music calendar will also show up on that listener's calendar view of favorits.
This way "I can see that the band I heard on the radio last week and
really liked, will actually play next Friday at this venue and I will make the effort to go and see them".
This is great for the listener, the DJ and the bands. Otherwise many would
have missed the show, not knowing that it was a band they really liked...
The theory is that the listeners "trust" the DJs at certain radio station for their good
taste and expertise in the music.
-
STATION AREA
This is the workplace of the DJs and station managers. This area is login/password
protected. Each DJ and station manager will have their own login and
password.
There are two levels of access to the station functionality. The first level is the DJ login. Everyone with a DJ login will have
access to DJ functionality:
In addition to having DJ functionality, the station manager login enables the following additional
functionality:
